National Citizenship Scheme

NCS is a personal development programme for 16 and 17 year olds to take part in which looks at developing key life skills for young people through a variety of activities. This includes a weekend residential at an Outdoor Pursuit Centre and 3 days of employability workshops at a city centre venue. This then culminates in a week long Social Action project where the young people pick a local cause that they would like to support.

Team One decided to team up with ‘Baca.’ Baca are a charity who offer specialised supported accommodation and development training for young people seeking asylum. Inspired and motivated by the great work that Baca do in the community, they came to understand that they could make a huge impact on the lives of these young people by fundraising for beds that could be used in Baca’s supported accommodation. In the space of five days, the team managed to plan, organise, and carry out three separate fundraising stalls and one sponsored event in Leicester. The team sold homemade cakes, savoury snacks, raffle items, and walked 10 miles to fundraise towards their goal and get the important word out about Baca to the general public. In a presentation the team delivered to the Business Development Director of Baca, they shared the wonderful news that they had reached their fundraising goal of £200 which is enough to buy a bed for a vulnerable young person seeking shelter and care. The Director was so grateful for the support from the team that “[she] bought them some Heroes chocolates because they had all been heroes during the week!”
